Welcome! Let me tell you a story...
Thank you for visiting my website! My name is Bobby Virk, and the idea that you're reading this right now is, well... simply amazing.
It's been quite a story that brings both you and I to this page - and it's the sort of story that could happen only in one place in the world: the United States of America.
I come from a family of farmers and soldiers in the Punjab region of India. My father retired as a decorated Indian Army officer, and some of my earliest memories are of celebrating my father’s return from war. My mother played the role of both parents. She ensured that we understood the sacrifices my dad, his colleagues and families had to make so that we could live in a free world!
We didn't have much - but my parents provided a strong foundation for my younger brother and me to build upon: deep belief in community, family, faith... and education. I focused my studies on Math and Science, which afforded me the opportunity of attending a higher level of schooling and complete my first dental training – my dream was always to be involved in healthcare and make a career out of helping others.
...with $400 in my pocket, I came to America in 1995 and supported myself for four years by delivering pizza, doing landscaping, anything I could to pay my own way.
I had always been enchanted by the idea of America and heard great things about it from relatives who would come back and tell me about all the opportunities. My parents didn't want me to go but my father scraped together $400 for me to make the journey, telling me “This is it – this is the best I can do.”
So I applied to the University of Pennsylvania, never thinking I had any real chance of actually getting in. To my amazement, the hard work and high grades I had achieved in Math and Science were enough to get me accepted!
I was recruited to work in Washington and made the move to the Puget Sound area, where I was fortunate enough to have family nearby. After practicing general dentistry for six years, I fulfilled my ultimate dream of completing study for an Orthodontic Residency at Boston University. That's where I met Dr. Helena Skountrianos. Dr. Skountrianos was a brilliant instructor - who I am now proud to call my wife - and soon I returned home to Washington, not with only degrees to my credit, but a with wonderful and loving life-partner. We have two young sons, Karan and Aris, and are active in our churches, PTSA, and our community.
I love my family, I love my work, and I love my patients - now, after 15 years serving the Puget Sound community, I own and manage a successful Orthodontic and Dental group practice with offices in Newcastle and Puyallup. All starting with that $400 a Punjabi farmer gave to his son to get an education on the other side of the world. Who would have believed it?
Like I said, "Only in America."
I owe everything to the hard work and integrity instilled in me by my family and to the near-boundless possibilities that only this wonderful country can offer - America truly is the “land of opportunity.”
So why am I telling you all this and why should you be interested? Because now I want to give back to my country and community by serving you - the great people of the 11th Legislative District - as one of your legislative representatives in Olympia. I promise that I will make every effort possible to re-affirm the American Dream for you, our community and all Americans.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story. I am looking forward to working with you to build a better America... starting right here in the 11th Legislative District of Washington State!
